BFC 0-3 Plymouth Argyle, Monday April 7th 2026

‘ow come he’s still on t’pitch, manager?’
If I want a paint job done, I’ll employ a painter. If I want a house designing, I’ll get hold of an architect. And if I want a barrel making (unlikely) I’ll Google ‘cooper’. So why do Barnsley FC insist on playing a kitchen fitter (or Shepherd, even) in defence? He is, without unquestionable doubt, the worst regularly picked defender I have ever seen in my Barnsley-supporting history. And this includes Paul Gibbs and Scott Wiseman. Admittedly, this only covers 46 years, and the 70s must have been grim, what with us being in division four an’ all, but still. Today was an absolute masterclass sh*tclass in how to defend. Will SOMEONE put Jack Shepherd (or me) out of my misery?

The opening goal, I’ve heard everyone else blame it on the keeper. And now I’ve seen it back, I understand why. A bouncing ball is lifted over MdG for the striker to bundle home, yet it’s seemingly in the air long enough for Crapman to step out and catch it. My problem was that I was following Shepherd during this move. I could see what was going to happen...Mdg going across to their guy who would arrive first and lift it over or across him...so Shepherd HAS to mark the centre forward. Has to. I think he realises too late the trouble he’s in and never gets close to the guy, allowing an easy finish (once Crapman has rooted himself to the line, as per). In fact, while the defenders all bark at Crapman about how crap he is, here’s a thing: we’ve seen Crapman refuse to come off his line countless times before so ALLOW FOR THAT and STOP THE CENTRE FORWARD FROM SCORING YOURSELF. (Equally, message for Crapman: you know how absolutely USELESS Jack Shepherd** is, so be ready to come off your line and claim. But I care less about Crapman. He’s on loan and come the end of the season, he’s someone else’s problem.*)

*PLEASE don’t be stupid enough to sign him. (Altho we signed Watters after a similarly unimpressive loan period.)

** PLEASE don’t be stupid enough to re-sign him. (His contract’s up in the summer, innit?)

The second goal will have the usual suspects barking on about a push. Yes, there’s contact, but MAN UP. Shepherd gets a nudge, their player gains a yard, and slams it in. Consider the respecting opinions of Donny manager Grant McCann on similar in his game, slating his player for not being stronger. Hourihane, meantime, mumbles on about it being a foul. Let’s ignore the fact Shepherd has spent his season going down under minimal contact. Who else in the team has a move named after him (the ‘Shepherd Flop’.) He has lost the...what? Will? Ability? Wherewithawal...to stand up to his man and not be bullied. Christ, he’s 6 foot 3 and built like the proverbial. Problem is, he IS the proverbial.

The 3rd goal, as I saw it in real time, I thought Shepherd was a tad unlucky as he accidentally clipped the opponent as he ran past him. I have since booked my appointment with Specsavers. Shepherd absolutely, and for no reason, absolutely cleans the guy out. Not quite GBH, but definitely common assault. But by now, I wasn’t angry. Just disappointed. Resigned. Oh, and all this from a nominal left back position, though all the incidents mentioned occurred in the POFSS (Position of Frequent Shepherd Sh*tness, ie, in and around the 6 yard box). (I put my special Little Lee Johnson hat on for that one, POMO, etc) Anyway, if Lee Johnson had a hat, I know which hat it would be... Oh, and who gave the ball away on the edge of his own box to start that Plymouth attack? Step forward J. Shepherd. Have I said I don’t rate him? Crapman dives the right way and gets a good hand to the penalty yet somehow...somehow...fails to save it. The limp-wristed fool.

As an aside, didn’t we beat Plymouth Argyle away (opening day) AFTER Shepherd was sent off? Conclusive proof, m’lud. We are better off playing with 10 men than that imposter playing in our team. Listen, I get it. He’s cheap, and if we play him enough it boosts his value. But that ship has sailed. I don’t know what the peak market value of Shepherd was, but I feel like those investors who lost their money in the 1929 Wall St. Crash. If only I’d sold my stock in ’28...

Onwards and upwards!

*** Kelly. Ran around, never gave up, and had a couple of promising runs.
** McG. Ran around, never gave up, and kicked a couple of shots into the crowd.
* MdG. For the block preventing a definite goal in the 1st half. And the other block preventing a possible goal in the 1st half. It’s called DEFENDING.

Official MOTM: McG.

Londontykes’ MOTM: 1. MdG 2. Kelly 3. Connell

Despatches:
We are SLEEPWALKING TOWARDS RELEGATION. It is that time of year when sides facing the threat of relegation pick up points against midtable sides with nothing to play for. The problem is, we think we’re one of those midtable sides. But if you look at the table, what are we? 5 pts above the bottom 4? I think 5 pts can be hauled in the remaining games, especially if we don’t get any.

One criticism I heard of Hourihane (who appears to have lost his sainthood) was that ‘he’s playing players out of position’. I think the guy on Praise or Grumble was referring to the GOAT playing at right back. But, apart from Shepherd, I also raise you a Tom Bradshaw. He can’t be a centre forward, can he? He gives ‘doing nothing’ a bad name. He scampers around, being second to everything, can’t hold a ball up if it gets to him, and lacks the ability to beat a player and create an opportunity of his own. So with him and The Kitchen Fitter, we’re down to 9 men. Add in Class of 2024-26 Luca Connell, and a Sri Lankan giraffe (I didn’t know Sri Lanka HAD giraffes) trying not to trip over his own feet, and I don’t see how we’re ever going to win another game of football again.

Coach Conor did, at least, bring Banks and Phillips off the bench to save the situation (they didn’t) but what must these 2 think? Not getting a game behind THAT. (Again, Coach Conor wants to play Yoganathan to increase his value, while I want us to win games. This is the dichotomy we currently face.) Another one is Crapman’s continual involvement, to everyone’s bemusement. After Flavell didn’t disgrace himself at Burton on Good Friday, Crapman is back in the team after his international sojourn. (I would LOVE to see him in goal for Canada in the World Cup, preferably against somebody half decent. They will score TEN.) Solid rumour has it that loan club Crystal Palace are paying his wages and if we don’t play him, WE pay his wages. Which, according to a member of the Supporters’ Trust, is £12k/week. Breathe that in. Six hundred thousand pounds a year to be THAT crap. That means I should be on at least 100k, for all the good I’d do in goal. (I wouldn’t be rooted to my line, for a start. Mind, I think that’s my main problem when I’ve played in goal, I’m not rooted to my line enough!)

Other passing mentions...O’Connell was there, or thereabouts. Let’s just say Plymouth weren’t scoring when the ball was in his and MdG’s vicinity. The GOAT was ok, after the opening minute when he was caught out of position, allowing Argyle to attack down that side. I noticed late on though, as we chased the game, he didn’t kick the ball forward once. Standard.

Cleary beat the odd player, but we didn’t give him the ball till 25 minutes in. Missed a great chance to make a chance by not passing it, with plenty of Reds in the box. Needs to stop believing his hype. (He’s another player whose value is decreasing the more we play him.) Have I missed anyone? The subs, Phillips, Banks, Leo Farrell...were suitably anonymous. I’d love to blame the referee for the defeat, but they scored more goals than we had chances. Scored more goals than we had shots on target. Scored more goals than Bradshaw had touches in their box. Etc etc.

It was awful. (63% possession, btw, so anyone not there can imagine what that looked like.)

Another player who sadly missed the game was former Reds walking footballer Herbie Kane. A hamstring tear means he’s been sent back to Hudds. A pity, I’d have liked to have seen the Battle Royale: Connell v Kane.

Drink du jour: Leffe in Bramahs. Talking of which, was A. Reed more angry at the slowness of the service, as he waited for his drinks courtesy of the Wetherspoons app (Spiral was closed) or at Oakwell? Andy? Andy??

BFC 3-0 Plymouth Argyle, Saturday 11th March 2023

‘Can we play you every week?’
In what is our latest ‘crucial’ game, we play host to Plymouth Argyle. Only a win will do if we’re to retain hopes of coming 2nd (tho since when did Ipshit start winning?). Draw, and I don’t see any way we’ll catch Argyle. Even a win and we’re unlikely, given their run-in. We take them to pieces.

The first half was even, an entertaining and high quality game though lacking in actual chances. We score early, as Kane blasts home from 12 yards. But no, offside given against Norwood in the build-up. If only we had VAR! Let’s just say it was close. Our usual slick moves make inroads into their half, but the finish isn’t there. The closest we came was a low Phillips cross to the front post and Cole a whisker away from connecting. He’s always a whisker away, which comes from not being a natural finisher. Lineker, Ian Rush….Super Sammy Winnall, they’d have snaffled that like a member of Weightwatchers staring at a Ferrero Rocher. (I sit here staring at a box of Ferrero Rocher.) Another amazing cross from Phillips, a half volleyed hook from near the corner flag gets zero reward. We also have no-one who can head a ball up top.

2nd half, all change. ‘Taxi for Argyle!’ Well, not quite. We ride our luck as Mads completely misses a long ball forward from their Virgil Van Dyke-alike* and they’re clean through. The ghost of Andy Rammell bears down on the centre forward, who doesn’t quite know what to do and confusedly dribbles it up to the keeper. I think it was their last kick of the ball. On the hour, Phillips takes the ball at the edge of the box, steps back, sets himself and drills a low one in from 20 odd yards. FINALLY I have seen The Enigma score. (This was about 5 minutes after I sent a WhatsApp message about Phillips continued inability to hit the target when I’m there….a header 15 yards wide, and another 2 yards high.) A quality strike.

*looked like him, didn’t play like him.

And such was the faith Duff has in this team that before we scored our killer second, he’d taken off Phillips and Norwood, replacing them with Benson and Tedic. I’m sure the person to my right wasn’t the only one questioning this. Phillips and Norwood had been outstanding and we’re playing a side who’re second. No matter.

A quarter of an hour or so later, a half-cleared corner is whipped back in by Bobby Thomas and Mads is in acres of space at the back post to head in. Like Norwood the other night against Pompey, Mads was stood there forever on his own, but the ball in was superb. We are CRUISING and it’s party time at Oakwell. As Plymouth start slinking out, the Ponty are asking the East and West Stands for a song – and getting one! What is happening!!??

Player of the Match (DON’T start me) Harry Herbie Kane is hooked, as is Connell, (Player of the Season thus far, surely). What happens? We score another. Luke Thomas is on and runs at their defender before falling/diving 4 yards into the box. Now, I’m not sure it was a foul, but once the ref gives it as such, surely it’s a penalty. I don’t care whether the initial contact might have been outside the box, it certainly continues inside….Luke Thomas makes sure it does. The ref awards a free kick. We will never, ever, get a penalty (see later). Cadden curls it into the top corner. YOU BEAUTY!

Rumour has it this is a side bearing down on promotion. But hold on, let’s not get carried away. It’s a crucial game this Satdy, at play-off chasing Wycombe. After that, a crucial home game with local rivals and league leaders Washday. Then another crucial game as Ipshit visit us. Crucial? Every game’s crucial!

Onwards and upwards!

*** Kane. After Mowatt and Kane, which hapless midfielder do we have to loan out to Oxford next? Kane was involved in EVERYTHING, gets up and down, makes the passes, puts in the tackles…and was unlucky not to score. Well, he did score, but you know what I mean…
** Jordan Williams. Up and down, up and down. We have done it again – making a profit on a player and replacing him with someone better.
* Mads. Magnificent 1st half. And finally scored. I’ll forget the aberration.

Official MOTM: Kane

Londontykes’ MOTM: 1. Kane 2. Connell 3. Andersen

Despatches:
Isted in goal dropped a couple, 1st half. But at least we didn’t have to put up with Collins’ timewasting antics. Perhaps having a keeper who gets on with it keeps up the momentum further up the field. Just a thought. Kitching and Thomas were massive in defence. It takes guts to hold the line while Argyle keep trying to thread a ball through. How many times did we catch them offside? Cadden kept possession well and scored a second consecutive blinder. Connell, Phillips and Kane. What a midfield 3. The only danger today was Connell’s early booking taking the aggression away for the rest of the game. It didn’t. And up front, Norwood carried on from Tuesday. That inability to get on the end of Phillips’ cross apart, I thought Cole was playing well, so not sure why he was replaced at half time by Watters, who managed to have 2 shots while simultaneously being anonymous. Still, he fills a space and takes defenders’ minds away from the better players in our team.

This penalty thing. Did you know today (Sunday) is our anniversary? It’s exactly a YEAR since we were awarded a penalty. (Thanks to P. Waddington for that.) We are 4th in the league, one of the highest scorers, and yet we have managed to avoid being given a penalty all season. The Goals For suggests we DO make it into the opponents box….and I’m sure there’ll be a stat somewhere about how often we’re in their box. Yet somehow, SOMEHOW, we have not even benefited from one of those ‘50/50’ decisions I keep hearing about.

'Hey Jude' at full time. What's that all about? 'THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN' FFS, after a victory. And I love The Beatles. Let's have a bit of Rocky Raccoon. Or Tomorrow Never Knows. Or Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. But this is dirge. Hearing it through our PA system is like listening to a bunch of Brummies in a pub singalong. Hey, Mr DJ - you've played it pre-match, leave it there. Instead, picture yourself in a boat on a river. With tangerine trees and marmalade skies. Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly....

Oh, and my pre-match meal. The other night I had fish, chips and mushy peas. How much? Have a guess. How much is fish and chips in BARNSLEY? Precisely, how much is fish and chips (and mushy peas, let’s not forget the mushy peas) at the chippy across and down from the cinema? OK, it’s had a refurbish. And I hear electricity is more expensive these days. A tenner. You read that right – A TENNER. Cost of living crisis, food and hospitality struggling….I refer the dishonourable Londontykes to my comments after going down to that there London for Charlton – I realise some industries are struggling, but I didn’t realise I had to rescue them on my own. Last time I was here, it was less than 6 quid. So I had pie and peas (with mint sauce) from the Oakwell Sandwich Shop….and didn’t realise that as I walked through the Ponty car park, I was slowly covering myself in mushy pea juice, seeping out from the polystyrene container (f*** the turtles and everything else currently living in our oceans). I was wearing so much green I could have been a Plymouth fan. I think it now has to be part of my pre-match ‘lucky’ routine.

Drink du jour: Inception IPA. Dee-lish. With Special Guest Star Miriam, up from Brighton for her 1st home game since before Covid. (I’m a bit gutted she didn’t have to share the pain of last season.) You can tell who these serious real ale drinkers are though – Miriam had 2 different half pints!

Away: 1,496. Tremendous. Their official supporters coaches were due to set off at 6:15am….with a pitch inspection at 10. Listen lads, if we don’t nick 2nd, I hope youse do it.

Today’s take home: It’s on.

Plymouth Argyle 0-3 BFC, Monday 22nd April 2019

‘You ain’t getting a bus from here you clown!’

Welcome....

This was one of the longest days of the season, and all I can say is thank f*** we won.  Having been checking on train prices since January, I never saw anything vaguely affordable for a west country jaunt to Plymouth, so had given up on the idea of going.  Then a conversation with the Two Andies t’other week after Coventry…the carrot of a lift (Reedy saw through that one – no chance!) and a bit of snouting around later, he has something approaching ‘reasonable’.  07:30 out of Paddington, back in London just before midnight, Two Together card at the ready – ours for the unprincely sum of £52!  Christ.  Oh, and work the next day.  I was well and truly fried, Tuesday.

Despite a refurb, the old facade thankfully remains.

I was at Paddington before 6 as well.  Unlike me, I know.  But these climate change protestors (good on ‘em!) had disrupted my bus route, so I had to jump on a tube.  It’s a weird feeling being early for the train.  I don’t like it.  Still, I bumped into Nice Guy Chris, and his wife, Nice Lass Jane, and M&S was open for a hot cross bun stockage (I make no bones about recommending their deluxe hot cross buns, the apple ones especially.  Mmmmmmmm….)

A first spot of the stadium / new roof on the old stand.

So, yes, we were in Plymouth 11ish, and what to do but go for a stroll and hit a seaside pub and have fish, chips and mushy peas in view of the ocean?  When else do we get chance this season?  Sunderland on a Tuesday night?  Course, we turned right at Plymouth Hoe, thereby missing all the other Reds fans down by the Barbican, but hey ho(e).  We strolled to another non-distinct pub for another before walking to the ground, through Home Park itself (if that’s what the giant bit of greenery is called around Plymouth’s Home Park ground).  All very pleasant, save for an emergency dash to the railway station toilet on the way.  As I stood outside the trap, I was this close (puts fingers very close together) to dashing into the ladies.  What does one do when you want someone to hurry up?  Do you SAY something?  (I didn’t; this being Easter, I just found God and prayed.  It worked, kids!)

Look!  The ocean!

Then we won a game of football.  In front of a near sellout crowd (it helps having only 3 stands, the main stand being rebuilt).  In fact, save for the first 5 minutes, we were imperious.  Again.  Then after an unlucky-for-Argyle 13 mins, Jordan Williams put a ball across for Cauley to superb control into his own path on the left and drag the ball into the far corner across the keeper.  What a finish!  Minutes later, Brown just about controls a cross from the left and pokes it home, before Mowatt curls a free kick in before the half hour.  Outstanding, Barnsley.  Outf***ingstanding.  (May I say, Mowatt’s goal came 5 seconds after Reedy commented about Mowatt’s lack of goals from free kicks this season, considering how bedazzling his left foot is meant to be).

Keeping the structure of the old Main Stand - love it!

Thereafter, it was a procession.
Davies did make one excellent save (a one-on-one) halfway through the second half, but otherwise it became the Kiefer show, as our talisman came off the bench and his teammates looked like they were trying everything to get him on the scoresheet.  Bahre put one into his path which was a gimme…so Moore put it wide with his left, while he blazed another one over the bar with his right.  Now, we know Moore has been training with the first team for a while., but it’s a pity shooting doesn’t seem to be amongst it.  Still, ‘lacking match practice’, etc.

Their flag does its rounds, pre-match.

*** Woodrow.  Cauley led the line superbly.  Great movement, holds onto the ball, brings others into play.  Scores.  Who is this Kiefer Moore?
** Mowatt.  Orchestrated midfield.  Again.
* McGeehan.  Between him and Mowatt they have central midfield tied up.  Needs to make sure his lunges connect with the ball though.

Londontykes' MOTM:  1. Woodrow  2. Mowatt 3. McGeehan

Onwards and upwards!

Looking towards the home side.
Despatches:
EVERYONE had a good game, though it’s nice to see Jordan Williams slot into right back so easily in Cavare’s absence.
(Where is Cavare?  Not even on bench was he?)  I felt for Plymouth though.  They match us for a while, then once they conceded, their defence dropped back and ceded midfield dominance to us…thereafter, everywhere the ball was we outnumbered them.  Most dominant game of the season and what a time to do it.
And since I’ve a potential 60 quid coming my way, I’ve become obsessed with the bookies’ odds (cos they’re never wrong, are they?)
What with Portsmouth nicking another tight win at lunchtime (boooo) and Sunderland conceding an injury time equaliser at Posh (celebrated as much as any Reds goal in the away end!) we remain 2nd faves at 4/9, with Pompey on 4/5 and the Mackems drifting to 6/4.  We have got this nailed…haven’t we???   As any fool knoweth tho, if Pompey keep winning, they go up.  Can they do it at Sunderland next Satdy?  And can we f*** up all our hard work by coming unstuck against midtable Blackpool?  It’s back to the prayer mat for me…
